Contact Lens Exams: Why Is It Important?

Contact lens exams, like all regular eye exams, allow your eye doctor to take a thorough look at the health of your eyes and the quality of your vision. Doing this regularly — about once a year — also lets your eye doctor keep a close eye (if you’ll pardon the pun) on any changes to your vision before they become serious.

However, if you’re a contact lens wearer, it’s important to make sure that your lenses fit both your eyes and your vision properly. In addition to a comprehensive eye exam, a contact lens exam will also involve a contact lens fitting. Here’s what to expect.

Routine, comprehensive eye exams

Whether you have 20-20 vision, eyeglasses or contact lenses, you need regular eye exams to help keep your eyes and vision at their best. Normally, this involves:
  • Eye tests to determine your refractive error and prescription
  • Cover tests that check how well your eyes work together
  • Slit-lamp exams that give your eye doctor a magnified view of the structures in your eyes in order to determine their health
  • Eye pressure or “air puff” tests that check for glaucoma
  • Pupil dilation that gives your eye doctor a better view of the back of your eyes

Contact lens fitting

Contact lenses are medical devices, so you need a contact lens prescription in order to buy them, and your eye doctor is required to make sure that your vision examination for your contact lens prescription involves finding the right fit for your lenses.

A contact lens fitting involves both a consultation and measurement. Your eye doctor will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. Some contact lenses may be better for athletes with active lifestyles, for instance; others may be better for frequent travelers who might need to occasionally sleep in their contacts. Your eye doctor will also ask you about whether you prefer colored contact lenses or disposable contacts.

Your eye doctor will also need to gather several measurements. The most common is the curvature of your cornea, your eye’s clear front surface. In some cases, your pupil and iris size will also be measured. If you tend to have dry eyes, your eye doctor may also perform a tear film evaluation to make sure you’re prescribed contact lenses that keep your eyes sufficiently moist.

Remember, your eye doctor is your ally in making sure your eyes get what they need to stay healthy and perform at their best. Make sure you seek professional advice whenever you’re encountering or making changes involving your eyes and vision.

After serving the clinics at the VA Medical Centers in Spokane, WA and Albuquerque, NM, Dr. Hung moved to Atlanta to join Omni Eye Services. Within this referral center, Dr. Hung served as a consultant in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease.

In addition, Dr. Hung participates in the education of fellow optometrists. He consistently publishes educational articles in optometric journals and lectures at national conferences. Dr. Hung is an active member of the American Optometric Association, the Georgia Optometric Association, and is the Past President of the Greater Atlanta Optometric Association. He also volunteers his free time to community vision screenings at the Georgia Special Olympics.

“Through the years, I have witnessed and managed many patients who suffer from sigh-debilitating eye diseases that are not detected in a timely manner.  This is because most eye diseases develop and progress slowly and painlessly.  After you see the extreme ill-effects of eye negligence, you develop a compassion and respect for the gift of sight.”
                                                                                            -Dr. Michael Hung

Dr. Teri D. Hung is a graduate of the University of Dallas and further received her Doctorate in Optometry at the University of Houston College of Optometry.  She has acquired extensive clinical experience from rotations through the Manatee Eye Clinic in Florida; Santa Fe Indian Health Service Hospital in New Mexico; and Baylor Hospital Low Vision Clinic in Houston, Texas.  She is board certified in therapeutic treatment of eye infections and glaucoma.  Dr. Hung specialized in all phases of primary eye care, including bifocal and rigid gas permeable contact lenses, as well as diagnosing and managing eye diseases.
For many years, Dr. Hung has worked alongside with one of Atlanta’s leading refractive surgeons.  As chief optometrist, Dr. Hung evaluated and managed patients for LASIK, IntraLasik, PRK, refractive lensectomy, cataract surgery, and implantable contact lenses.  She also served as a research coordinator for multiple FDA clinical eye investigations.  Her optometric work has been recognized in multiple media outlets, including Good Morning America, Today Show, and Fox Live News.
Dr. Hung is an active member of the American Optometric Association and the Georgia Optometric Association.  In her free time, Dr. Hung enjoys running and hiking in the beautiful outdoors of Georgia.

“Not only do I want my patients to have the most optimal vision, I want them to be proud of how they look.  I truly enjoy getting to know my patients and giving them all the options that will meet their vision needs.  It is extremely satisfying to see how someone’s face lights up with the right pair of glasses, the perfect contact lens fit, or from the amazement of laser vision correction.”
